A Seamless ETRM Implementation

Modernizing Physical Gas Scheduling through a Dual-ETRM Model with Zero Operational Disruption

Operational Challenge

A leading international global chemical manufacturing network, managing natural gas procurement, transportation, and consumption across its United States operations had become increasingly disjointed. The firm was using a legacy ETRM platform primarily as a trade repository, but the system lacked the capacity to handle physical gas scheduling. The core system could not support physical scheduling, operations teams were forced to rely heavily on manual Excel spreadsheets to manage hundreds physical trades each month. This reliance created severe operational inefficiencies and forced schedulers to manually capture intricate fees and pipeline paths.

The business required a modernized, centralized ETRM solution that could accommodate complex physical scheduling while preserving the legacy ETRM system as the corporate System of Record, bridging a critical alignment gap between corporate middle office, back office, and IT teams and US commercial users.

Strategic Approach to Project Success

Value Creed’s approach focused on analyzing the client’s requirements carefully. The underlying issue was analysed and a structured methodology was built to avoid any operational disruption. By leveraging the legacy ETRM’s capabilities alongside EnTrade, our team of experts established a dual-path integration approach to maximize each platform’s strength.

Implementation Services

Our team established a scalable foundation without any operational disruption by segregating it from downstream accounting functions. This was achieved by implementing a comprehensive implementation workflow:

Step 1: Advisory & Project Management

Conducted comprehensive discovery workshops to architect a future-ready operating model, providing critical project management to align European corporate IT and American business teams on a dual-system architecture.

Step 2: Master Data & Plant Modelling

Configured the client’s extensive physical gas network, including pipeline receipt/delivery points, storage agreements, fee structures, and specialized plant operations directly into the system.

Step 3: Dual-Path Integration Engineering

Developed automated interfaces to route ICE transactions to both the legacy ETRM system and EnTrade, ensuring reporting consistency within the client’s existing Power BI framework.

Step 4: Testing & User Enablement

Executed over 200 system integration test scenarios covering the complete trade lifecycle, followed by knowledge transfer sessions on nomination workflows, variance analysis, and reporting.

Key Takeaways

Achieving a scalable and unified ETRM model was successful by the project’s overarching goal, which was to create platforms specifically designed to reduce the operational risk of moving extremely complex commodities. The targeted hyper care ensured financial stability to align with an intensive post go-live support to ensure immediate adoption of the new operating model. The strategic integration utilized a separate operational platform, EnTrade, while keeping the legacy system for accounting intact to minimize the organizational impact and maximize each platform’s core strength.

A scalable and configurable monitoring framework enables organizations to adapt to changing operational requirements while maintaining reliable reporting and efficient business processes.
