Value Creed’s Data Solutions

Optimizing ETRM Systems with Event Driven Architecture

Efficient Data Migration and Integration for Streamlined ETRM Systems

In today’s rapidly evolving energy trading landscape, organizations often manage multiple energy trading and risk management (ETRM) systems due to mergers and acquisitions, geographical expansion, legacy systems, or specific functionality needs. While these multiple systems may be necessary, they often create significant challenges, including data inconsistency, fragmented reporting, and increased operational costs.

Disparate ETRM Systems and Their Impact on Business Operations

As organizations grow and evolve, they may need to maintain multiple ETRM systems or migrate entirely from one system to another. This can occur for various reasons—perhaps one system offers superior functionality for a specific region or commodity, or legacy systems continue to operate alongside newer platforms due to historical familiarity or specific requirements. Endur, for instance, is often an ideal target system for consolidation due to its comprehensive functionality across different commodities and regions. However, the resulting landscape of disparate ETRM systems often leads to substantial challenges:

Data Inconsistency

With multiple systems in place, ensuring data consistency across the organization becomes a significant hurdle. Reporting on P&L, credit risk exposure, and cash flow becomes increasingly complex, as data is sourced from various platforms, leading to potential discrepancies.

Operational Complexity

Managing different technical teams for each system can lead to inefficiencies, missed synergies, and higher operational costs. Additionally, maintaining multiple infrastructures and licenses further increases expenses.

Reluctance to Migrate

Many organizations are hesitant to migrate to a unified ETRM system due to past experiences with long, costly, and often unsuccessful migration projects. The fear of disruption, combined with the complexity of consolidating systems, often discourages companies from pursuing the ideal state of a consolidated ETRM environment.

ETRM Integration with the Value Creed ETRM Data Migration Accelerator

We understand the complexities and challenges of managing and migrating multiple ETRM systems. Our solution—the Value Creed ETRM Data Migration Accelerator (VC EDMATM)—is designed to address these challenges efficiently and effectively, allowing organizations to transition from a fragmented landscape to a more consolidated and stable operational environment. Endur, with its robust capabilities, is frequently the preferred choice for such consolidation, and our solution is optimized to support this migration.

Key Features of Our Approach

Our solution leverages a cutting-edge event-driven architecture, using Kafka as the streaming platform to facilitate seamless data migration between ETRM systems. This approach ensures real-time data updates and minimal disruption to ongoing operations.

Whether you need to perform an on-demand migration or maintain multiple systems in parallel, our framework is flexible enough to handle data migration across various ETRM platforms. We provide both automatic and on-demand migration options, ensuring that your data is migrated accurately and efficiently.

Our microservices architecture allows for precise data transformation tailored to the target system, such as Endur. By utilizing AVRO schemas and defined payload contracts, we ensure that data is accurately processed and delivered in the required format.

We’ve implemented a resilient resend mechanism to handle any potential failures during data migration. This feature significantly reduces the need for manual intervention, ensuring your migration process is as smooth and error-free as possible.

Security is paramount in our approach. We utilize OAuth2.0 protocols for API authorization, ensuring that all data transfers are secure and compliant with industry standards.

Technical Deep Dive with the Architecture Behind the Solution

For those seeking a more in-depth understanding of the technology behind our data migration solution, here’s a closer look at the technical details:

Kafka, a distributed streaming platform that facilitates real-time data movement between ETRM systems, is at the heart of our event-driven architecture. Specifically, during migrations to Endur, Kafka topics are used as the primary data exchange points, where data is produced and consumed in a continuous stream. The source ETRM system pulls data, transforms it into payloads, and pushes it to a Kafka topic. Endur then consumes this data in real-time, ensuring that every update is captured and processed as it occurs.

Our solution employs a microservices architecture to address the complexities of data transformation and migration. Each microservice is dedicated to a specific task—whether extracting data from the source system, transforming it, or pushing it to the target system. For migrations to Endur, we utilize AVRO serialization to ensure data integrity is maintained throughout the migration process. This approach allows for efficient serialization and deserialization as data moves seamlessly through Kafka topics.

To meet diverse organizational needs, our solution offers both on-demand and automatic migration options.

To ensure data migration reliability, we’ve implemented a resend mechanism that automatically requests the source ETRM system to resend any data that fails to process correctly. The system retries up to three times, minimizing the need for manual intervention and ensuring accurate data capture throughout the process.

All APIs exposed by our microservices are secured using OAuth2.0, requiring JWT tokens for authorization. This security framework ensures that only authorized users and systems can access the APIs, preserving the integrity and confidentiality of the data migration process.
